Balayage vs Highlights: Which Is Right for You?
It's one of the most common questions we hear in the salon: "Should I go for balayage or highlights?" Both lighten and brighten your hair, both look beautiful when done well — but they're created in completely different ways, and they suit different people, lifestyles and budgets. As Droitwich colour specialists, here's our honest, jargon-free guide to help you decide.
What's the actual difference?
The simplest way to think about it: highlights are a placement technique using foils, and balayage is a freehand painting technique.
Highlights
Traditional highlights are created by weaving out fine sections of hair and wrapping them in foils with lightener. Because the colour is applied from very close to the root, highlights give a more uniform, all-over brightness with higher contrast. They're brilliant if you want a consistently lighter, "done" look.
Balayage
Balayage (French for "to sweep") is painted onto the surface of the hair by hand, usually starting further down from the root and getting heavier towards the ends. This creates a soft, sun-kissed, graduated effect with no harsh regrowth line — the look you get after a summer in the sun. You can read more about how we do it on our balayage in Droitwich page.
Side by side
| Highlights | Balayage | |
|---|---|---|
| Technique | Foils, from the root | Freehand, painted on |
| Look | Brighter, more uniform, higher contrast | Soft, natural, sun-kissed gradient |
| Regrowth | More visible line — needs regular top-ups | Grows out softly, no harsh line |
| Maintenance | Every 6–8 weeks | Every 3–5 months |
| Best for | Consistent, all-over lightness | Low-maintenance, natural dimension |
Which lasts longer?
This is usually the deciding factor. Because balayage is applied away from the root, there's no obvious line as your hair grows — so most clients only come back every three to five months. Highlights, applied right up at the root, show regrowth sooner and typically need refreshing every six to eight weeks.
If you love the idea of gorgeous colour but dread frequent salon trips, balayage is often the more practical choice. If you want to stay consistently bright and don't mind more regular appointments, highlights deliver that beautifully.
Good to know: it's not always either/or. Many of our clients have a "babylights and balayage" blend — fine foils around the face for brightness, with painted balayage through the lengths for that lived-in softness. At your consultation we'll tailor the technique to your hair, not the other way around.
Which is better for my hair type?
- Dark hair: balayage gives a gorgeous, natural melt — though very dark hair may need a couple of sessions to lift safely.
- Fine hair: foil highlights can create the illusion of more density and brightness.
- Thick or long hair: balayage keeps the colour looking effortless and is easier to maintain over big lengths.
- Grey blending: highlights are often better for softly blending greys across the whole head.
The healthiest results always come from a proper consultation — your hair's history, condition and natural depth all matter. Whichever you choose, we use premium colour and always protect your hair's integrity. See our full range on the hair colour & highlights in Droitwich page.
How much do they cost in Droitwich?
Balayage is a more involved, hand-painted service, so it typically sits at a higher price point than a standard highlight — but because it lasts longer, many clients find it works out similar over a year. At Gorgeous, every colour appointment includes a consultation, toner and a cut and blow dry, and we'll always give you a clear price before we start. There are no surprises at the till.
Still not sure? Book a consultation
