Balayage Aftercare: How to Make It Last
One of the best things about balayage is how low-maintenance it is — but a little care makes it last even longer and keeps it looking glossy and expensive between appointments. Here are our colourists' top tips for protecting your investment.
1. Wait before your first wash
Try to leave 48 hours before washing freshly coloured hair. This gives the colour time to settle into the cuticle for a longer-lasting, truer result. When you do wash, lukewarm water is kinder to colour than hot.
2. Switch to colour-safe products
Sulphate-free, colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner make a genuine difference — harsh detergents strip colour faster. A weekly toning treatment (a purple shampoo for cool blondes, for example) keeps brassiness at bay between salon visits. Ask us to recommend the right products for your exact shade.
3. Don't over-wash
Washing every day fades colour faster and strips your scalp's natural oils. Two to three washes a week is plenty for most people — reach for dry shampoo in between. Your colour (and your hair's condition) will thank you.
4. Protect from heat
Always use a heat protectant before straighteners, curling tongs or the hairdryer. Heat damage dulls colour and roughens the cuticle, so this two-second step keeps balayage looking shiny and healthy.
Sunshine & swimming: UV and chlorine both fade colour. Pop a hat on in strong sun, and rinse hair before and after swimming — or wear it up and use a protective oil.
5. Book a gloss or toner refresh
Even the best balayage benefits from a mid-cycle toner or gloss to refresh tone and shine. It's a quick, affordable appointment that keeps your colour looking freshly done without a full re-colour — perfect for stretching the time between bigger appointments.
6. Keep your ends healthy
Coloured ends need a little extra love. A weekly conditioning mask keeps them soft and prevents that dry, faded look, and a regular trim stops split ends travelling up the hair. Healthy hair simply holds colour better.
How often should I come back?
Because balayage grows out so softly, most clients return every three to five months for a refresh — far less often than traditional highlights. If you'd like to book your next appointment or a quick toner top-up, get in touch and we'll keep your colour looking gorgeous.
