What to Expect from Your First Ear Piercing
Getting your first piercing is exciting — and a little nerve-wracking if you don't know what to expect. The good news? With a professional piercer and the right aftercare, it's a straightforward, safe and even enjoyable experience. Here's everything our expert Droitwich piercer wants first-timers to know.
Needle, not a gun
The single most important thing to know: a proper piercing is done with a sterile needle, never a piercing gun. Needles are cleaner, more precise and far gentler on the tissue, which means a more comfortable experience and better healing. It's the professional standard, and it's what we use for every piercing. Choosing your piercing
There's a whole world beyond the standard lobe. Some of the most popular options:
- Lobe — the classic, heals fastest (around 6–8 weeks), great for first-timers.
- Helix — the upper cartilage rim; stylish and very popular.
- Tragus — the small flap in front of the ear canal.
- Conch, flat, daith — inner-ear placements for building a curated "ear stack".
Not sure what suits you? Come in for a chat — we'll look at your ear anatomy and help you choose placements that work for your ear and your style.
Does it hurt?
Honestly? There's a quick, sharp pinch — but it's over in a second, and most people say it's far less than they'd feared. Lobes are the most comfortable; cartilage piercings are a little sharper but still very manageable. Our piercer will talk you through every step, so you're never caught off guard.
The jewellery matters
We fit implant-grade titanium jewellery for new piercings. It's biocompatible, hypoallergenic and gives your piercing the healthiest possible start — which really matters while it settles. Cheaper, lower-grade metals are a common cause of irritation, so quality here is worth it.
Aftercare: the golden rules
Healing is simple if you're consistent:
- Clean twice a day with a sterile saline solution — no alcohol, no harsh products.
- Don't twist or touch the jewellery. Leave it alone and let it heal.
- Keep it dry — pat gently after showering; avoid swimming pools while healing.
- Be patient — lobes heal in weeks, cartilage can take several months. Don't change the jewellery too soon.
We're here after your appointment too. Every piercing comes with full aftercare guidance, and you're always welcome to pop back or call if you have any questions while it heals.
